Iraq, the banking crash, phone hacking, the expenses scandal, historic child abuse… Even before Brexit, it seemed that the country had fallen out of love with the establishment. And maybe all of those crises were just symptoms of something really profound happening: the advent of a new version of democracy. In a world of 24-hour news and social media frenzy it is often difficult to remember what happened last week so Alwyn’s discussion will provide a fascinating reminder of recent events which were serious, amusing and simply bizarre.
Alwyn will be interviewed by Gerry Foley
Alwyn is the author of All In It Together: England in the Early 21st Century. More information is available here
‘He writes with a tremendous sense of fun. The result is a rare thing: not just a serious work of contemporary history, but an unashamed, 24-carat hoot’ – Dominic Sandbrook, Sunday Times
‘Up there with the best … Reading it is almost like an out-of-body experience’ – Craig Brown, Mail on Sunday
This session is presented in association with Explore – Lifelong Learning in Newcastle upon Tyne. More information is available here
