Care homes & our elderly community
One aspect of our festival that is extremely rewarding, is our volunteer visits to Berwick’s care homes to read poetry to residents. Reciting much-loved poems evokes memories that may have become buried over time.
Residents are encouraged to request poems that bring back special memories for them – and to join in reciting the verses they remember.
How amazing and heart-warming it is to listen to an elderly person, who may struggle to remember day to day activities, reciting a poem that she learnt in school 60-70 years ago.
Volunteer
We're currently looking for volunteers to help us develop and maintain a regular programme of reading sessions in local care homes.
Whether you're a lover of literature, or simply someone who enjoys spending time with others, we'd love to hear from you.
Our volunteer readers bring poems, stories and conversation to residents, helping create moments of connection, reflection and joy through the power of words.
