In Memory of Kathy Galloway (1952–2025)
We are deeply saddened to share the news that Kathy Galloway – a poet, activist, theologian, and former Leader of the Iona Community – has passed away following a recent cancer diagnosis.
Kathy was due to speak at this year’s Berwick Literary Festival, and her voice will be greatly missed. Her event, listed in the printed programme, will no longer take place. But her presence, wisdom and radical compassion will continue to ripple through the Festival and far beyond.
As the first woman elected to lead the Iona Community, Kathy’s life was a beacon of faith in action – shaped by justice, generosity, and an unwavering belief in peace. Her words guided many, her leadership inspired thousands, and her poetry offered both solace and strength.
We join with so many others in holding her family and loved ones in our hearts.
We share these words from Kathy’s poem Benediction, from Talking to the Bones (SPCK, 1996):
A blessing on our arrivals
Homecomings, new beginnings, bright horizons.
A blessing on the Trinity of journeys.
Giver of the Way, Jesus of the Way, Spirit of the Way.
Thank you, Kathy. For your life, your witness, and your words.
