Creative forms of journalling offer an accessible, personal reflective practice, with the potential to make a quiet but lasting difference to our wellbeing.
But how do we make space for these kinds of activity in daily life, and how might we expand them beyond conventional, diary-like narratives?
The Present Page is a series of six friendly, practical workshops that begin with journalling and the page, and gently expand outward into drawing, movement, storytelling and sound.
Led by experienced artist-practitioners, each session offers a welcoming, no-pressure space to explore a creative practice together, while considering how these approaches can be folded into busy everyday routines.
Workshops in the series
-
From writing into drawing – Anna Chapman Parker
This first workshop will introduce journalling as a daily creative practice. We will consider five accessible forms of journalling, and explore a series of short writing prompts. We’ll then look at how the physical act of handwriting can lead into drawing, and consider how this might enrich how we view and absorb a piece of text. All materials are provided.
-
Drawing with mind and body – Kate Temple
This workshop will consider how drawing can be a regular wellbeing practice that can be relaxing and meditative while also focused, creative and generative; a way to connect mind, body and imagination. Through a series of guided exercises, we'll take on the 'blank page', starting with our breath as a way in to creating lines, marks, shapes and patterns, repeating and expanding as we go. No drawing experience necessary.
- Storytelling and personal narrative – Chris Adriaanse
Throughout our lives we become entangled in many different stories, from the ones we tell the world to the ones we keep to ourselves. But what is the shape of these stories? And are they the ones we would choose to live under? In this session we will look at the stories that surround us and how to put down the ones that are no longer needed.
- Journalling and the book – Lucy Baxandall
In this session, you'll make a unique personalised journal with a variety of different page structures (accordion, codex, pockets and more), and add a handmade paper cover. Then we'll begin to customise the page backgrounds using layers of handmade collage paper, ready for you to continue adding content as your journalling progresses.
-
Letting your ears wander – Martin Parker
By exploring ways of listening and mapping out what we have heard, this workshop offers a way to silence the chat within and start a new conversation with the sounding world around us. We will note the difference between passive and active listening and find ways to listen beyond ourselves whether at work, in the middle of an argument or trying to get to sleep. Expect to develop new approaches to enjoying music and the soundscape of daily life.
Writing and movement – Chloë SayersThis workshop invites you to explore where and how movement and writing intersect. Through simple and playful exercises we’ll think about writing as an embodied practice and explore ways of tuning into the body and writing choreographically. No movement experience required.
Thanks to Create Berwick funding, we are delighted to offer The Present Page free of charge to Berwick residents. All materials and refreshments are provided, and no previous experience is needed. Places are limited, so booking is essential.
You are welcome to book individual workshops or attend the full series.

The Cabaret of Words, Thu 19th Feb 2026
Whether you’re stepping up to the mic or soaking it all in from the audience, we can’t wait to see you there!
This time around, we’re trialing a small adjustment to how the evening is structured:
- 6 ten-minute performance slots are available to book in advance
- 6 wildcard slots (5 minutes) will be drawn on the night from the soon-to-be legendary Cabaret Hat (you can drop your name into the hat on arrival)
To give everyone a fair chance to take part and encourage as many voices as possible, we’re also now encouraging regular performers to book a 10-minute slot at every other Cabaret, rather than every time. Of course, the wildcard slots remain open to all, every time.
This gentle shift is all about increasing variety, discovery and opportunity for all, and continuing to build the supportive, inspiring community that makes Cabaret of Words such a special night.
Tickets continue to be free, but you now have the option to make a small donation (£5 or £10) to support the Berwick Literary Festival.
SIGN UP HERE to be the first to know when future Cabaret of Words performance and attendee spaces can be booked.
