In Salley’s new novel The Gardener, seeking solace from an unhappy love affair, Hassie Day moves with her sister, Margot, to a rambling Jacobean house on the Welsh Borders. She employs a young Albanian migrant as a gardener, and is befriended by an eccentric, retired school teacher. Hassie discovers that there is more to this ancient area than meets the eye. Salley writes with the profound psychological insight and sense of the power of place that is the hallmark of all her novels from Miss Garnet’s Angel onwards.
The Gardener will be published in November 2021. More information is available here
